Group NewsThe list continues to grow!! It's exciting to see how many people are out there working towards the goal of their first half or full marathon this year. If there's anyone else interested, just take a look at the main page.
What's Everyone Been Up To? *
There were all kinds of blog-worthy happenings the past week. Molly at I'm A Sleeper Baker officially registered for her marathon and so did Erika from Chasing My Monkeys 1 Mile at a Time. She officially registered for Long Beach just before she headed to the Chicago Rock 'N Roll Half Marathon (Bobbi from Zero to 26.2 ran the Chicago Half too!). Raquel at Historian on the Run also registered for the full Rock 'N Roll Marathon-San Antonio in November. Congrats to everyone for committing officially!!
Allie from the Constant Pursuit officially kicked off her marathon training this week and has all kinds of races planned between now and the Philly marathon in November. Katie at Legally Fit started her training for her half this week and Ruth at RunningItOff has picked out her first half marathon training program which begins next week. Have fun as you start to train!
Molly at I'm a Sleeper Baker has the earliest marathon in the group, in September, so she's already up into those high mileage long runs. Myself and Nicki from Nicki's Nook are on the same training schedule and watch each others training runs on DailyMile. We're not the only ones sneaking up there in miles. Lisa at Lisa's Yarns is following the same training plan and is a week behind us. Then, Oliva at Blissful Runner had a killer 16-miler this past weekend as she prepares for Baltimore. Kellie at Running Rodeo tackled 16 over the weekend too! Way to go!!
Kate at RunwithKate completed the San Francisco Half the other week. Chris from Evolving through Running is exploring some new running grounds during his vacation in Boston. Gary's been putting in his miles during the early morning and Kelsey from the Blonde Bullet debated running in a monsoon, but opted not to. People are running all over the place!
Mindy from The Road to Becoming a Runner discovered the awesomeness of a Garmin while Pam from Thirty Schmirty is learning to love her new friend, the foam roller. If you don't have a foam roller, check out Julie at Julie's Running Blog since she is hosting a giveaway for one! Rene at The Amherst Shuffle is still undecided on her new Newton's. Becka at 50 Half Marathons in 50 States is loving her new running skirt. New gear popping up everywhere!
A few members are being smart and taking it easy to make sure they avoid injury. Here's hoping that Aneta's (Confessions of a Rambunctious Runner) knee is better soon (so she can beat Oprah), that Heather's (The Crazy World of A Running Mom) shin pain goes away soon and that Anne's (Asthma and the Gift of Running) PT has her on the right path!
Question Time (feel free to answer here or use these as inspiration for your own blog post).
What made you decide you wanted to run a long distance race?
Why the full marathon or half as your distance of choice?
Finally, why was this the year to go for it?
Poll Time (open to everyone - the more input the better!)
* I'm trying my best to stay on top of the latest happenings with everyone. If I missed something you'd like mentioned, feel free to let me know!! Like the format/don't like it? Feel free to give me any comments or suggestions on what you'd like to see!
omg, u r a freaking genius! this is amazing!
ReplyDeletethank you for organizing this!!! awesome, awesome. thats all i can say.
Thank you for the shout out....i am sooo gonna beat Oprah!
abbi what a fantastic idea you have putting this togehter!!! Wish I would have had this for my first.
ReplyDeletefor anyone doing a race prior to the marathon I hope they'll sign up for the PR Challenge, it's a good motivator too.
ok i clicked through to a bunch of hte blogs, so great! thanks for linking everyone
ReplyDeleteWow! This was an incredible post. You covered everything...you're a busy girl!!
ReplyDeleteGrrr I just typed up a long response and the internet ate it. Great job on keeping everything organized! I'm really excited!
ReplyDeleteAbbi, you are a rock star for putting this all together! It's so wonderful to read about so many other people on the same journey.
ReplyDeleteYou. Are. Awesome! :)

ReplyDeleteThanks so much for this! I am adding a bunch of blogs to follow!
ReplyDeleteI picked the Va Beach Rock n Roll 1/2 marathon in sept because I could convince my 2 best friends to do it with me. We are making a girls weekend out of it (no kids allowed!)I'm pretty nervous as I had to back off on the training plan because of a sore hip!
ReplyDeleteThis is so fun! I need to make a date w/ my google reader this weekend & update my reader w/ everyone's blogs!
ReplyDeleteWell, this is my 2nd marathon but it feels like my first since I did my last one in '06... I took time off from running while i was working full time/going to grad school at night - so now that I have my life back I figured this year would be a good year to take on this challenge. And then Amber of Girl With the Red Hair and I started emailing back and forth about it and decided to do a marathon TOGETHER.
I love the challenge of marathon training & the discipline it requires... I am a type A person so marathon training is something that jives well w/ me & my love of spreadsheets/schedules. :)
Thanks for getting this group started!!
Has anyone told you this was a great idea? Yeah, I didn't think so.
ReplyDeleteI STILL LOVE THIS! =)
Way more than I love my foam roller. Owowowowowowow.
Wow, there are alot of us who are marathon virgins:) Fun post Abbi! Thanks for the mention too!
ReplyDeleteGreat post Abbi. Wish I could say that I have attempted a Half Marathon. I had it all signed up and ready to go and then my back decided to play up again. Nevermind there are always other races.
ReplyDeleteWay to go getting all this together!!! Looks like it's going great :)
ReplyDeleteI can't even imagine how long it took to type and link all thoes people. Geesh. Great work.
ReplyDeleteAs far as the poll goes, my anwser would be dynamic stretching (big movements that use all muscle groups) I find tend to be better. It's not just a static hold the cold muscle stretch, but helps to get blood flowing and all the muscles warm!
I started running in Feb and have just completed my third half. I guess I wanted to do a full this year (my last year in my 20's) just in case my body decides to fall apart when I hit 30 next may!
I picked california because I'm from Michigan but I love the beach. This way I hope to have something so much bigger than I am to stare at while I'm running (the ocean) and if all else fails, I can end it all by running straight into the water! Ha! Just kidding!
And fellow dreamers...I'm trying to make my way around to all of your blogs, but know I'm out here supporting you! Way to go!
happy Wednesday Folks!
Thank you so much, Abbi! This is fantastic, even though I am a day late on getting here to read it.
ReplyDeleteI do stretch off and on all day, on top of stretching before and after a run.
I have been behind all week - messing with my scheduled runs to fit in the rest of life. LOL! I will get it all in this week plus a 5K on Sunday.
Great recap, you made my stomach lurch when I read that my marathon is coming up first!
ReplyDeleteMy Dad ran marathons and triathlons when I was a kid, so I just assumed I would do one too eventually. Things just fell into place this summer training wise, so I figured, it's now or never!
It was time for me to do it. I finally conquered the half marathon distance and needed to up the bar. I am hoping the bar-upping is gonna stop @ the marathon distance. I can't imagine going longer than 26.2!
ReplyDelete(I'm a new follower and wanted to say hi!) I ran my first half this year in honor of turning 30. My previous self thought that was a crazy goal!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great thing you started! Love the links to other runners - will have to check some of them out.
ReplyDeleteThanks Abbi! You are amazing!
ReplyDeleteI will be adding it to my blog for a whole separate post. Thanks again for your hard work.
Two questions: Is it too late to be included? can be included if my race is the first week of Jan. I plan to race in the Disney Worl Half Marathon Jan 7/8. This would be before you begin the 2011 group. I also half several 10k's duing the fall and a possible november 13.1. All to get my speed up in order to be more competive for my first Half Ironman November 2011. Please let me know I would love to join in.
ReplyDeleteBehind as usual! I've posted the answers to this weeks questions here! The Ragnar Relay is 1 week away and with fall sports and back to school it is difficult to find time to do anything! :)
