1. First, limiting/removing some social media items, mostly ones I never logged into. The only one I actually used was DailyMile but I deleted it today. I like my spreadsheets and hard copies - I'll stick with those, no more redundancy. The only ones I'm keeping are:
- Facebook, which I hardly log into anyway
- Athlinks, not that I use the social aspect, but there's no better way to look up people's past race times...don't act like you've never done it!
- Ravelry - all things knitting!
2. Google Reader - I've started unsubscribing to blogs I no longer care to read. My list is still huge but it's nice to get rid of a few that I don't ever really read that I always skip over anyway. The ones I enjoy will still be read daily.
3. E-mail Subscriptions - As they are coming through, I'm taking the time to unsubscribe instead of just continuing to hit delete. Just because I ordered some random Cubs T-shirt two years ago does not mean I am going to again - no need to keep getting their e-mails.
I could really use an e-clean up! I have about 4,000 emails sitting in my inbox because I never take the time to go through and delete. I should probably delete my facebook account, but I don't know if I have the willpower. Now that I live so far from family it's been a good way to stay in touch. (That's my excuse anyhow).
ReplyDeleteI need to take a cue from you and simplify as well... it sounds so peaceful!
ReplyDeleteso thats why I lost a follower ;) good for you for deleting facebook...I think thats the only way I keep in contact with some people. Simplifying is a good goal and its definitely good to do every once in awhile
ReplyDeleteI should just delete my daily mile account, too... I never use it! I need to start unsubscribing from all those dumb newsletters/store deal emails that cluter my inbox. I think simplifying is a really, really good focus for 2011!
ReplyDeleteLOL... I totally stalk people through athlinks :D
ReplyDeleteI have started unsubscribing from a lot of email subscriptions too. So annoying!
ReplyDeleteBOOO for quitting Dailymile :P
good idea...I need to do the same!
ReplyDeleteGreat way to "clean house!" I'm with you on getting rid of all those unwanted emails. And yes, I use Athlinks all the time to peak, I confess!
ReplyDeleteOh, man, I am sooo with you on this one!! Especially the unsubscribing email thing...I am so sick of those emails!!
ReplyDeleteI've been unsubscribing from unwanted emails for about a year now.... I'll miss you on dailymile and I hope my blog made the cut!
ReplyDeleteGreat way to clean house -- I've started purging email subscriptions and other social sites I'm not using too...it's very freeing!
ReplyDeleteNo Daily mile anymore? I'm very impressed! I don't think I could do that, it helps me to motivate myself. At the same time I'm shocked how dependent I am on the internet, not good... your post made me thinking
ReplyDeletegood work! way to take the time to de-clutter. it always makes me feel more on top of things and able to focus on what really matters.
ReplyDeleteGood stuff! I should probably do the same, but the Lululemon and J Crew emails are my guilty pleasure/procrastination technique!
ReplyDeleteI definitely need to do some e-trimming as well... yikes!
ReplyDeleteYes, I cleared out the google reader too, and eliminated the blogs owners who never bother reading mine. I can't get ride of the dailymile - yet. I've only just gotten the hang of it!
ReplyDeleteI feel like I am constantly unsubscribing to emails. good job, it feels great not to be bogged down.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on finally doing it!
ReplyDeleteI'm also doing this but will continue when I'm back at work next week. Mine is totally out of control. This was a good reminder for me.
ReplyDeleteI have considered doing the DailyMile. Hearing that you let it go makes me feel not as bad about never starting it:) Good luck to you in 2011!
ReplyDeleteWhat marathon are you running in the spring?
Yess! I need to clean up my online junk too. So many various logins... Annoying. Def need to clean out inbox, unsubscribe, file old emails away... And née to purge google reader badly - 500+ subscriptions, sheesh!
ReplyDeletei did the same a while back. i never realized how many email subsciptions i had until i got a smart phone and an alert went off every 30 seconds!
ReplyDeleteI am relieved to hear I am not the only one who has stalkishly looked up someone else's race times on Athlinks!
ReplyDeleteI really need to do this too! thanks for the reminder. I like Athlinks.
ReplyDeleteThat's really funny. I do have Facebook but I don't use it. I was on a Dutch site called Hyves and simular to Facebook where I deleted my account last year.
ReplyDeleteI've cleaned up my Google reader before Christmas and now think before I press on the follow blog button. If I have a new follower I will leave a comment on their blog but if they leave it at one comment on mine I'm not following them.
As for the email subscriptions, did that too somewhere last year.
So we had the same idea at different times.
