January Numbers:
Total Miles Ran: 171
Number of those miles that involved me holding a dog and a leash: 38
Number of those miles on trails: 37
On today's run I came to the conclusion that one of the latest pairs of shoes I bought (August or September??) officially need retired. They must go where my running shoes go to die - dog walking or lawn mowing shoes. The part that is really hard about this - they aren't old...at all. They probably only have 75 miles on them, if that, I have no idea, that's not something I keep track of. They just aren't working for me and I think they may aggravate my left foot which sometimes gives me issues.
When I bought them, while I liked them at the store, they never felt right from the first run. I was hoping they would be my next 'long run' shoes. With trail races and Ragnar approaching last fall, I put them aside, and ordered a super cheap pair of the original Brooks Launch online for my fall road shoes.
My first pair of the Launch treated me pretty well so I knew they were a safe choice. Except, the super cheap pair were actually a half size smaller than what I normally wear...it's all that was in stock. But, the original pair I had were small too. The sales person thought the smaller size was better when I bought the first pair. I went with it and after some breaking in, they seemed to feel OK, but I kind of always thought I still needed my normal size.
Then, November came and I had foot issues. The new Brooks Defyance seemed to aggravate it so I put those aside again. The 2nd pair of the Brooks Launch was OK but I was convinced this pair seemed smaller and still wasn't in love. The dog also ate part of the heel on one of the shoes, although that doesn't really impact their use! So, I broke out an old pair of Newtons and along with my trail shoes, this has been my rotation. Of course, after I took this picture, I realized I actually have another pair in the rotation. This pair of Kinvara's are over a year old and they have been my treadmill shoes (don't run on it that much!) and they stay inside and nice and clean.
In January, miles were either on the Kinvara on the treadmill in the super early mornings, the very old pair of Newtons or the fairly old pair of Inov-8 trail shoes and sometimes the half-eaten, too small Brooks Launch. I wore the Newtons on all the longer runs and by far, they have been feeling the best.
I tried again today on the Brooks because I thought with my foot feeling perfectly fine, maybe they would work and I'd like to get some use out of them but it was definitely a no-go, after 4 miles, I wanted them off. Now that they are out, I'm considering buying a new pair to add into the mix soon...I was really hoping it wasn't going to be the Newtons - too expensive! Of course, if I'm running on a pair that I bought in 2010, I guess the longevity should counter-balance it!
Four pairs of shoes in rotation - how about you?

I went through a long time when I was trying many pairs of shoes, but I think I FINALLY found my sweet spot. I tried the men's Kinvaras last year and never looked back! I still like the Karhu Fast, too, and I try to rotate it in once a week, but the Kinvara fits my foot better (I have very wide feet). I wear the Kinvaras on the track, on the dirt streetcar line, on the road, and for marathons!
ReplyDeleteonly one pair now...but I just ordered a second pair to see if it will help with PF I have been having.
ReplyDeleteI have mizunos wave inspire 7 and Brooks Ravenna 2 on the way
Awesome mileage for Jan!!!!
ReplyDeleteBut bummer about the shoes that only lasted 75 miles! Lame! I have 3-4 pairs in rotation too, but am usually heavier on two with the other two more at the end of their life. I used to only get about 275 miles on them, but as I am losing weight I can run longer on them. I think.
Your January mileage is seriously impressive!
ReplyDeleteEver since I had problems with my ITB in the fall, I've gone down to just one pair of shoes. I need to replace them soon, though.
Nice January miles!
ReplyDeleteI only have 2 pairs of shoes in rotation: trail and road. I need to keep it simple or else I forget to chance out worn out shoes!
That is some pretty serious mileage for January! Only 2 pairs in rotation right now, Kinvaras with Superfeet inserts.
ReplyDeleteWow, that is alot of miles! Way to start off the year strong!
ReplyDeleteI run in Mizuno's and love them. I switched to Nike's for a race and hated them, and now I am back to mizuno's for life!
I've only got one pair at the moment, but they've got about 300 miles on them now, so it's time to buy another pair and start working them in.
ReplyDeleteOh and HOLY CRAP at the January miles you racked up!
ReplyDeleteAwesome miles, Abbi! You rock!! I've got 4 pairs of shoes in rotation right now, plus my trail shoes (which I don't count because I rarely use).
ReplyDeleteI have two pairs of shoes in rotation, but really it's mainly one pair that I usually wear. I think I have the same Newtons as in your photo. I don't wear them all that often. Most of the time I wear Brooks Adrenalines. But I'm thinking about getting a new pair of shoes soon to throw into the mix.
ReplyDeleteI've got three pairs, but one is just for cross training so I don't even know if that counts. I ALSO have a couple that don't work quite right - hate it!
ReplyDeleteI've got 2 pairs I'm currently running in. I've been transitioning to minimalist shoes (merrells) and still running in my Brooks for longer runs. I also always have a pair of retired running shoes around to hike in.
ReplyDeleteRight now I have 5 pairs in rotation: two trail and three road. I had a similar issue as you with the Brooks Green Silence. I used them for about 150 miles and then all of a sudden I kept having bad runs with them so they are now retired for good.
ReplyDeleteAs always, I'm super impressed with the amount of miles you log with your dogs!
Congrats on the Jan mileage. I just rotate out with 2 pair of the same shoe (Asics Nimbus) and for speed training, (rarely done) and races, I use the Asics Sky. I try and keep it simple, but Asics and I seem to get along from the beginning. Yes, here in PA was nice yesterday, and today so far. Take care.
ReplyDeleteFOUR....that's nothing...I have 6 pairs of running shoes and 3 pairs of cross trainers.
ReplyDelete...and I keep stalking out new colours...yikes
Awesome Jan miles!
Seeing as how I'm not running right now I have zero pairs in rotation...ha. But I typically only wear one. I don't actually "break in" new shoes, I just dive in on full mileage and I've never really had a problem. (And I don't really run trails so I don't need a pair for that.)
ReplyDeleteI also wear shoes WAY longer than I probably should. I think that led to some serious blister problems two pairs ago so maybe I should rethink that strategy... Anyway, I LOVE my Newtons! I say go ahead and splurge! They're worth every penny!
1 have 1 pair. and 1 old retired running pair for cross training. for some reason i don’t like to change it up. i have a pair of newtons that probably have 25 miles on them. what size are you??
ReplyDeleteThat's where my shoes go to die too--lawn mowing shoes!
ReplyDeleteNice miles this month!
I was rotating between the Asics Cumulus & the Kinvara but the Asics just aren't cutting it for me anymore. The pair I have are nearly brand new...such a shame, but we have to be comfortable, right?! I also like that the Kinvara's are cheaper. :D
I just rotate Mizuno's. Love them too much to buy any other brand!
ReplyDeleteYou have tried them all! ; ) It's so hard...I never seem to be quite right with my shoes. Trying a new pair tomorrow, in fact. Good luck with it!
ReplyDelete3 pairs in rotation right now. I used to only own one. so this is new for me :) I loved reading about all your shoes and miles GREAT job!
ReplyDeleteOh an dI got "marathon" and I am loving the read thanks so much for suggesting it xoxox
I also have several pairs of running shoes. 2 pairs of Sauconey ProGrid 4 (for my long runs), then Brooks Pure Connect (which felt awesome in the store, but after 1-2 miles of running, my left foot hurts, not sure what to do now) and my vibrams (mid-week shorter runs).
