Friday afternoon I left work a little early to tackle a bunch of errands. About half way through, I wondered where in the world all these people came from - shouldn't they be at work? I guess I miss a lot in all the hours during the week when I sit in front of a computer for work. I thought grocery stores would be empty and it would be a breeze to get through town and tackle errands - I was wrong. Even the dog grooming place where I buy the dog food was hopping.
In the end though, dog food was purchased, new running shoes were purchased, the car was washed and I went to three different grocery/specialty stores to get food for the week.
I planned on doing a 20 miler Saturday and wanted to get all my errands out of the way on Friday so my weekend was completely free. My plans changed a bit though. My husband's plans changed last minute and he wasn't going to be gone all day like we originally thought so we decided to hang out together and go look at property for sale.
I'm pretty sure I found another reason why I like running. Instead of exploring back roads in a car, I can do so on foot. If you are on foot, you do not get car sick. The final two hours of our adventure were rather miserable. I was hot and then cold, had a headache and on the verge of puking with every curve we drove around. West Viriginia roads are like that. Luckily, it quickly went away after we were back on the interstate.
So, no 20 miler on Saturday. Instead, I just hit the treadmill for some miles in the evening because I was antsy for not running and being cooped up in a car.
I woke up Sunday morning with the plans to get in the 20 miles. I'm pretty sure between the new shoes and the Brooks Nightlife jacket I wore (which I won last year on a blog contest and still love), I looked like a complete tool. No one should wear that much fluorescent clothing. Most people would probably break in new shoes as well but I figure there was no better way to break them in with 20 miles. I figured they were going to work and felt safe doing so. I'm believe I was right! First 20 miler of the year complete, despite it being fairly cold and windy.
An ironic thing from my Friday errands. I spent an insane amount of money on the new shoes yet when I went to wash the car, I made sure to go to the car wash where the hand bays are $1.75 instead of $2.00. And, I certainly wouldn't go through the expensive automatic one or the one where someone else actually washes it for you - far too expensive!

Uhm...those shoes are amazing! I say, wear as much fluorescent, fun colored clothing as humanly possible. If running companies sold striped or different colored tights, I wouldn't own black and dark blue ones!
ReplyDeleteHaha, good point, the jacket and shoes are just super bright. No one is going to miss me now!
DeleteHaha I had a job a few years ago that required me to work Saturdays, so I always had Thursdays off and everytime I went out to do errands I thought the same thing. I guess maybe most people aren't gifted a M-F 9-5.
ReplyDeleteCongrats on the long run! I have a nasty habit of also breaking in new shoes with double digit miles. So far it's worked out though!
It just means we give the shoes a really good initial test I think!
Deletehahaha I totally agree with the grocery stores and such being crowded during the day. I remember when Logan was first born and I took him out to get some small things and it was packed! although many of the people were elderly or moms. but still. I was shocked. lol
ReplyDeleteLots of people (myself included) work nights...so maybe that's why.
I love the new shoes and free jacket....I don't think you look like a tool. Just tell people you're being safe ;)
I was just shocked on how busy and it didn't seem to be old people or stay at home moms - guess there are just lots of people up here with different shifts!
DeleteI think it's a good look. :) When I go to the store during the week, it's always packed. Lots of people seem to be jobless bums like me haha.
ReplyDeleteI get really car sick too, so I feel your pain. Great job on getting the 20 miles done the next day!
Guilty as charged about being in the grocery store during the day (usually after a workout with the PT at just after 1:00PM). One of the benefits of being self-employed & now having a couple of assistants to answer the phones etc.
ReplyDeleteYou can never wear enough bright neon stuff especially if it has 'Boston Marathon' in big huge letters on it... Nice shoes, no understatement there!!
The more obnoxious you look, the faster you run. I'm pretty sure there's scientific evidence.
ReplyDeleteI don't work a typical 9-5, 5 day/week schedule, so I'm often at the grocery store at say 11 am on Monday morning or running an errand at Target at 2pm in the afternoon. Since I live in a college town, I figure that a lot of people out shopping are either students, moms, work more flexible hours, or are un(der)employed because of the bad economy.
ReplyDeleteI bet you did not look like a tool. I like the fluorescent running look. And I love those new orange shoes!
ReplyDeleteI get every other Friday off so I am sometimes out running errands that day. I try to get them done on that day too, so my weekend is free. I am happy your 20 miler went well!
I think your jacket and my neon yellow shoes match! :) I like the orange shoes and it looks like your jacket picks up the accent color of the shoe. You did it on purpose, didn't you?! ;)
ReplyDeleteNice job with your 20!!
I am a bright runner of late as well...better than my usual black on black on black I usually sport. Nice job on the run!
ReplyDeleteGood job on the run. I think my next running jacket will be bright like that - I often worry about being too dark in my black jacket and tights!
ReplyDeleteYeah for the 20 miler!! :)
ReplyDeleteI have that same 'don't these people work' thought when I take a day off! I guess there are alot of people who work alternative work schedules?
ReplyDeleteNice job on the 20 miler! And I love the jacket and shoes. :)
Digging the new shoes - and your hardcore approach to breaking them in. Since my recent bike purchase I've learned to embrace all things fluorescent. As poorly as I ride I prefer to be visible from space.
ReplyDeleteI love your orange shoes!!! Mine are a really boring white, that has turned grey.
ReplyDeleteI'm greatly impressed by your 20 miler. 10 miles is my personal best.
Mom's Home Run
I used to work an abbreviated schedule - so I worked a 9 hour day for 9 days and then the 10th day I got a day off. So, I was off every other Friday. It was awesome. I wish I still worked for a company that did that.
ReplyDeleteI went to Target on Monday and had the same exact thought. "What's with all the people? Shouldn't people be at work?!" Of course, I'm not working right now either so I guess I shouldn't pass judgement. Also - glad to see you went with the Newtons!
ReplyDeleteoooooh, I'm going to Fleet Feet to get new kicks, I may have to go the fluorescent route! Nice job getting that 20 miler in!
ReplyDeleteI would worry about the orage and yellow clashing, but I bet no one would notice that. That is a nice jacket. It's cool that you won it.
ReplyDeleteLove all the bright gear! At least you know you will be very visible! I would rather spend more on running shoes and less on washing my car too. makes perfect sense
