When BodyGlide Doesn't Help

This weekend, I experienced a new kind of chafing while running a half marathon.

I would have expected it if I had worn something like this and forgot the stick of BodyGlide:

But, I was wearing this - very safe and chafe proof:

The chafing I ended up with was on my eyelid.  My eyes tend to water a lot if it's cold and a bit windy.  I'll blame my contacts but other people who wear contacts don't seem to have the same kind of issues.  Due to repeatedly wiping my eyes with my shirt sleeve, my left eyelid was left with a small chafe mark where I rubbed it raw and it hurt!  I attempted to take a picture of my left eye on Monday - it didn't work out so well.  In case you are wondering, taking a picture of yourself with one eye shut makes for some terrible photos.

Sunglasses would be the obvious choice to help prevent the issue but I've just never been one to wear sunglasses.  The watery eye issue tends to be particularly bad while on trails.  I'm not sure sunglasses would really work there either.  It seems like when I'm on trails, I have to wipe my eyes repeatedly to keep them clear so I can focus in front of me and where my next foot landing will be.

Anyone else have watery eye while running issues?  Any recommendations?

  1. Ouch!!!

I have seasonal ocular allergies, so in the springtime I have to clean the goop off of my contacts after a run, but I don't have a big issue with them watering otherwise.

I wish I could just afford to have Lasik surgery and be done with it.

  2. Ouch! Sorry about the chafing. I have never had it on my face, but I have chafed in other places and it sucks!

  3. Ouch! I'll bet that hurts.
I've had chafed neck, thighs, ribcage, arms (from running and/or swimming in a wetsuit) but not an eyelid. My eyes do water sometimes when I run. Maybe I've just been lucky...

  4. Yikes - that sounds really painful! I wish I had a suggestion for you. I've had chafing around my sports bra, thighs, of course, and under my arm, but never my eyes!!

  5. Chafing on your eyelid...that's a new one! I wear sunglasses more for eye protection than the sun. Especially when it's windy.

  6. Ouch! That sucks! I have no tips on that. I am not a huge fan of sunglasses either, but my eyes have never really watered so much that it has bothered me or required a whole lot of wiping. Ow!

  7. Wow! I've chafed almost everywhere imaginable but never my eyelid. Ouch!

Eric got me really nice running sunglasses a few years ago and I REALLY like them and wear them all the time in the summer! They help!

  8. I've been stung by a mosquito on the inside of my upper lip but have never been chafed on the eye. Sounds pretty painful! I'm glad you spell chafing correctly, too many 'chaffings' out there... :-)

  9. BodyGlide on the eyelids from now on? You just can't have any shame when you're a runner :)

  10. I've never had eye issues....I need runners sun glasses though. I normally wouldn't wear them during racing. I love you and your cutie pup though. you both look like you're ready for serious racing!!!!

  11. Put vaseline on your eyelids. Do it a few hours before and repeat a couple of times before the race.

  12. Ouch, that sounds awful. I wear contacts and luckily haven't had any problem with watery eyes while running. I always wear either sunglasses or a hat though because my eyes are sensitive to bright sunlight.

  13. I've had the chafe issue at my eyes before and it burns like hell. My problem is not watery eyes but sweat running into my eyes that I have to wipe then. I started wearing proper running caps made of good quality material. (New Balance and Adidas have great caps for me) The caps keep the sweat out of my eyes very well with no need to wipe.

  14. Eye chafing!!! Dude, that has got to be a first. I sweat like crazy but also either wear a hat or a large hair band (razzy roo or bondi band) that stops a lot of the sweat from getting into my face.

  15. My eyes water a lot too. I'm wondering if something like Aquaphor might help. Just a thin coat. It still might get rubbed off but might give you a little protection. Might be worth a try.

  16. That sounds painful! I would agree with everyone above some type of Vaseline or something might help. I had a lot of chaffing issues this summer training for my marathon, not fun!

  17. That sounds awful! I usually run in sunglasses, maybe that would help?

  18. I think that's just about the craziest place I have heard of for chafing! And it doesn't sound fun.

I tend to have the opposite problem with my eyes and running--dry eyes. Good luck figuring this one out!

  19. Wow, I have never heard that before! I wear contacts, but don't have any issues, so I can't help you, sorry! What a bummer though. Can you body glide your lid? Or what if you don't wipe it? Is that even possible?

  20. Ouch! You can actually use Bodyglide on your face! It has been used under the toughest conditions including Antartica for that purpose! Can you please get in touch with kathryn@bodyglide.com? We'd love to talk with you.
